About the Author:

Lauren Hostetter is currently a Junior majoring in Fine Arts with a minor in Japanese Culture at the University of Southern California. She has been painting and drawing on various things since the day she was handed half of a blue crayon at the age of six months or so. Fortunately for her parents, she didn't start drawing on the walls until she was nineteen; now her roommates have to put up with it instead.

This piece is from a larger project produced in four parts of similar style.  As an artist, much of my work focuses on the human body and its relation to cultural ideals.  For this particular series, I worked with a long-term friend who has consistently struggled with his weight, and with whom I have had many discussions about body image in general.  My wish was to express his struggle with body image, but also to emphasize the beauty and complexity of unconventional body types by portraying his form as a sort of pseudo-topographical surface.
